Efforts to return artwork stolen during the Holocaust to their rightful owners have been building. But the restitution process has minimal rules, and requires painstaking research, often characterized by uncomfortable exchanges, lawsuits, and sometimes, reluctant galleries and museums. While art galleries around the world grapple with the issue, controversy also struck closer to home, as questions arose around transparency in the return of one piece from the Art Gallery of Ontario. As many commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, The Agenda puts a lens to returning Nazi-looted art.
